PAMULA NARASIAH

Sri Pamula Narasayya is a very popular Samaritan lived in Andhra Pradesh. It is a great fortune of Telugu people to have such a great Samaritan. But unfortunately his life is not celebrated as much as it deserves to be. Evidence of his greatness or his details are not freely available anywhere on the internet or any other media. The reason behind this article is to show our respect towards that great soul.

In this article, along with details of Sri Pamula Narasayya's mystical powers, we will also explore, his interesting link with a famous temple in Vizag city, which is not known to many of us. We will also explore the secrets behind how a snakebite could be healed by just listening to a mantra (a mystical incantation).

The original name of Sri Pamula Narasayya was Cherukumilli Venkata Lakshmi Narasimha Rao. As a child he once visited Kasi. When he was bathing in the River Ganga, he was fortunately spotted by the Peetadhipathi (Pontiff) of Sringeri Sharada Mutt (a religious and spiritual monastery of South India established by His Holiness Sri Adi Shankaracharya). Noticing the peculiarly resplendent face of Sri Narasayya, the Pontiff recognised that he is destined to bring great benefit to the society.

The pontiff then given mantra of Sri Garuda to Sri Narasayya, which possesses the power to work as an effective antidote to snake poison. (Garuda is a kite-like king of birds and an enemy of serpents. Being the celestial vehicle of Sri Maha Vishnu, He possessed immense power to swiftly go anywhere). Following this instruction, Sri Narasayya chanted the Mantra with devotion for many years and came to possess the power to dissolve and remove the toxicity of any kind of snake poison, just by uttering the mantra and save people's lives. This great blessing became a boon to thousands of people through one interesting incident.

There was once a British officer near Madras city who was bitten by a poisonous snake. With no Doctors around and treatment by local quacks using herbal methods proving to be ineffective, he was at the verge of death! At that time Sri Narasayya happened to pass by that place and offered to heal the officer through the mantra. The officer who was fast losing his life agreed to it half-heartedly as a last resort, and to his pleasant surprise he became fully cured of the snake venom within half an hour. Sri Narasayya explained to the amused officer the power of the Veda mantras (Incantations) behind such a miraculous cure. Humbled by this experience and respecting Sri Narasayya’s mystical skill, the officer appointed him at the local railway station, equipped with a telephone. (In those days all train stations were telephonically well-connected).

The purpose of the telephone was that anyone who suffered a snakebite could call Sri Narasayya from any nearby railway station and get cured through his mantra recited to the victim on the phone. His Telephone contact numbers were displayed prominently as emergency contacts in all railway stations so people could call him when needed. Subsequently he was promoted as a Superintendent at Madras Railway. In this way Sri Narasayya saved many thousands of people from fatal snakebites in his lifetime, but never charged them any fees for his humane service. Such generous and non-commercial behaviour is the legacy of the great Rishis and Holymen of our country.

Unlike other conventional healers known at that time who cured the patients through their touch or by giving holy water or a talisman, Sri Narasayya’s treatment and healing was unique as it was delivered remotely from Madras. He used to constantly wait by the phone at Madras railway station and would attend to any call from people from remote places (e.g. Vijayawada). If he received a call from someone suffering from a venomous snake bite, he would ask to speak to the patient and Taking out a handy rag of cloth, he would tie it into a knot and keep chanting the Garuda mantra to the patient on phone while being seated in penance. This would continue till he heard from the patient’s side that the venom loses its ill effect on the patient. Once he was satisfied that the patient will be healed, he would pour a little sand into the rag, knot it up again and tie it to a nearby tree. This completed the treatment and patient would surely recover fully from the snake bite. This way Sri Pamula Narasayya healed many thousands of snake bite victims.

Travelling internationally (22 times Germany and 12 times world tour) he aroused the curiosity of many intellectuals who tried to test his method but ultimately had to surrender themselves to the great mysticism behind his mantra power. Despite healing snake bites this way, he was very respectful towards snakes and would not tolerate the killing or torturing them in any way. He used to say that the deceitful humans are far more dangerous than the gullible snakes. In one of his Russia tours, local people sought to test his mantra power by subjecting him to a snake bite and see how it affects him. He asked them to refrain from such a test saying that he always chewed a highly poisonous, beautiful and juicy herb called “Nabhi” which safeguarded him from any snake venom which in fact would be fatal to the snake that bites him. The imprudent Russians did not pay heed to his warning and went ahead with their test by making a snake bite Sri Narasayya when he was unattentive. True to his fore-warning the snake itself died within 8 minutes of biting him while Sri Narasayya himself was unaffected by the snake bite.

Now let me explain how I came to know of Sri Pamula Narasayya. While on a research for a novel in Vishakapatnam, I met Sri Eluru Ramayya who served in the Government and retired as a Deputy Collector. He was a close associate of Sri Pamula Narasayya and narrated many mind-boggling incidents. Sri Ramayya who was a senior revenue officer was posted in many rural and forest areas during his tenure. During one such posting in a forest area, the place where he resided was infested with snakes. One of his employees suffered a snake bite but was saved by Sri Narasayya’s mantra. Sri Ramayya asked Sri Narasayya for a more permanent cure for the vexed problem of frequent sighting of snakes around his place. Sri Narasayya offered him an interesting solution. He took a few grains of Millets, read out his mantra into them, and asked Sri Ramayya to dig up small moats around his house and fill the moats with these mantra-energised Millets. Sri Ramayya followed the advice and filled-up the moats around his house with the millets and covered them up with soil. To his utter surprise he witnessed many times that the snakes were unable to cross the barrier created by these millets. Such is the power of Sri Narasayya’s mantra.

Sri Pamula Narasayya had another great talent – he was also an alchemist who could convert base metals (Iron, Copper etc) into precious metals (like Gold) through

the use of certain rare herbs Many people including my father witnessed the display of his skill. Once a certain group of professors from Andhra University challenged him on this skill. He proved it to them in public as he converted some base metals into Gold by boiling them along with certain herbs collected from the nearby Simhachalam hills the night before. Amazed at what they saw, the chemistry professors asked Sri Ramayya to get the Gold sold to a Goldsmith in the nearby town. The Goldsmith too was baffled by such purest form of Gold never seen before and offered Rs 570 for it (very high value in those times). When Sri Ramayya returned with the money, Sri Narasayya stopped them saying he did not want to earn any money through his skill. He asked them to purchase some sweets in a local Sweet shop and offer the sweets to the patients in a local Leprosy Home. He was so particular about not expecting monetary gains from his skills. He was such a benevolent person!

In another similar incident, he used his alchemist skill to solidify 10 Kgs of liquid Mercury with the help of certain herbs, an impossible task according to chemistry! He made it into the form of a Shiva Linga, giving it the name “Rasa-Lingam” (Etymologically, "Rasa" means a "liquid chemical"). He further experimented with the Linga, converting it from Silver colour to a stone colour Treating it as a pious and powerful idol of Shiva, He asked for it be consecrated in a temple lThe Shiva Lingam was finally consecrated in Bhavatarini Kali Mata temple near Ramakrishna beach in Vizag. Within the same premises, there is a Brown coloured temple situated next to the Kali temple where this Shiva Lingam can be found Many people including the temple priests are unaware of this interesting fact that the Shiva Lingam was created by Sri Pamula Narasayya from Mercury.

We will now delve into the mysticism behind the power of the Mantra delivered remotely over telephone and its potency as an antidote to snake venom. Let us start with an interesting incident. Once my father visited a hospital in Vishakapatnam on some purpose There he witnessed a little girl who was bitten by a snake and the poison turned her body into blue colour. As the Doctors gave up hope on saving her life, someone from the crowd suggested to call Sri Pamula Narasayya. The call was made and luckily Sri Narasayya was found. He then administered his Mantra healing over telephone and after 10 minutes confirmed she will be fine. As my father witnessed, he saw the girls body gradually losing the blue colour of the venom and gaining her original colour. The girl then regained consciousness being fully cured and started looking for the snake that had bitten her – as she was still mentally in that state! My father, the doctors and others were pleasantly surprised at this magical event.

My father approached his Brother-in-Law, Sri Ekkirala Krishnamacharyulu (Master EK), whom he treated as his Guru, seeking explanation of this magical cure of Sri Narasayya administered simply through a telephone call into the victim’s ears. My father was habitually curious to dig deeper into reasons for such inexplicable things before believing them. For this Master EK explained that it is indeed possible and explained the reasons further as: The healing is not very different from the cure we experience through medicines. But how can an intangible mantra have the same effect as a tangible piece of medicine which when swallowed leads to a chemical curing process. This should be thought about this way: Imagine if a person is asked to fetch a glass of water and he does that action… what actually happened was the request for water acted as an instruction on the person’s brain, prompting him to physically move and fetch the glass of water. In the same manner, certain powerful mantras can cause the mind to react through instructions and initiate the healing process. That is the physiological and chemical effect of such instructions on the mind and body. This was proven through experimentation by Russian psychology scientist called Ivan Pavlov. A person was pricked by a thorn in darkness, but on seeing a snake escaping nearby he started to believe that the snake has bitten him. The person them imagines the snake bite and his mind creates an illusion of its effects so much that his body reacts and his mouth also froths up Due to this strong illusion the person was almost about to die! Many such experiments have been conducted to prove the chemical and physiological effects caused by the instructions sent to the brain. So a mantra also works the same way! Just as a medicine is manufactured by a special selection of strong medicinal herbs and chemicals from the nature, the mantras also are created from special sounds and syllables. These special syllables are called Beejakshara (Akshara means an alphabet or a syllable) and they carry the power similar to a medicine. One incompetent doctor's failed treatment does not disprove the entire science of medicine. Similarly one failed mantra cannot disprove the power of Mantra! However the Mantra has to be practised and applied through spiritual learning by the right person, Just as medicine is to be administered by a well learned doctor.

This is how Sri Pamula Narasayya healed many thousands of snakebite victims and proved the power of mantra till as recently as 1997 when he passed away. The place where he was cremated (apparently somewhere near Diviseema) is yet to be discovered. This brings us to the debate on Science versus Vedic Philosophy about what takes precedence between seeing and believing! My father used to advise me the importance of rational thinking behind everything, however the approach should be open-minded rather than with the intention of disproving a belief. If we had explored our scriptures with an open and positive mind (from the angle of “It may be possible” rather than “it is impossible”), whatever our ancient rishis have propounded we could have discovered many more secrets in our vedas and used them for the benefit of mankind rather than looking for reasons to dismiss them as blind beliefs. One doesn’t need to be knowledgeable to criticise something ignorantly! Sree Matre Namaha!
